Battlefield Size, how can i reduce it?

I've reached the point where the battlefield size is crashing the game or coming up with popup dialogs about things being undefined about half the time...

What can i do to remedy it?

So far the most useful piece of info i found was this,

but i dont think it is possible to decrease ranged skill?

Try equip everyone in your caravan with melee weapons (or not equip them with weapon at all) in the primary weapon slot. Equip ranged weapons in the secondary weapon slot may be safe.

The battlefield size should be calculated using the enemy ranged skill only, if any of them has ranged weapons.
